The summer silly season is upon us and it’s important to remind ourselves of how to remain safe over the season where electrical hazards are at an all-time high. With pool/spa and air-conditioning usage increasing, as well as the installation of Christmas lights, it’s a great time to learn how to be electrically smart with some hot electrical safety tips.

With summer well underway, now is a better time than ever to remind ourselves that water and electricity are NOT a good mix. As the temperature rises, we opt for the pool to cool ourselves down and along with that comes the increased risk of electrocution and electric shock injuries. To avoid disaster, follow these tips when enjoying a dip in the pool:
- Make sure you and your children are dry before returning inside and using electrical equipment such as a kettle or blow dryer.
- Have a residential electrician check your electrical motorized pool equipment every few years to ensure that it is grounded and non-conductive.
- Opt for the use of battery operated electrical devices outside of the home.
- To prevent electrocution that can lead to drowning, have a residential electrician inspect your pool or spa and upgrade any cables/wires in accordance with updated safety regulations.
The start of summer in Australia means that Christmas is coming, and with the festive season comes fantastic light installations and beautifully lit Christmas trees. While the festive lighting is beautiful, it can add an element of danger to the holidays if not done correctly. Over the Christmas season, there is a rapid increase of recorded electrical fires and electrical injuries in the home.
To avoid a Christmas disaster these tips will ensure safe decorative lighting.
To avoid a Christmas disaster these tips will ensure safe decorative lighting.
- Inspect old Christmas lights/electrical wires for signs of damage.
- Aim to use LED Christmas lights over incandescent lights that radiate greater levels of heat.
- If you’re big into lighting up your home and wowing the neighbours, then consider having a residential electrician come to your home to upgrade external power and check that all power outlets are safe and not overcrowded.
As the weather heats up, the air con goes on, and whilst it may seem like a straightforward and at times lifesaving appliance, the electric current generated by such a large appliance accounts for a number of electrocutions over summer. Many electrical injuries are due to homeowners attempting to repair, clean or service their A/C with little knowledge of how the appliance works or how to do so safely. To avoid any hazard, always have a qualified residential electrician to install and service your A/C, no matter how hot or desperate you may be.

Plug in fans are another great tool for beating the summer heat, but be sure to check that all fans purchased and plugged into your home are from reputable manufacturers that provide appliance warranties. Multiple cases of home fires have been linked to cheap and faulty plug-in fans that happen to overheat and can combust with overuse. To avoid this risk, begin to check the heat of your plug-in fan during usage and regularly check for product recalls of your electrical appliances.
Lastly, as goes with any electrical appliance or socket in your home, keep an eye out for warning signs such as buzzing/crackling, small sparks, heat upon touch and burn marks. If these occur call your electrician for a check or remove the appliance to be safe.
